California NAACP Endorses Pot Legalization, Which Could Lead to Legal Germination of Cannabis Seeds

By: Dave, Fri Jul 9th, 2010

Blacks are far more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than whites, even though they smoke less pot than whites, according to a just-released study by the Drug Policy Alliance. The California State Conference of the NAACP reacted to this finding Monday by announcing an “unconditional endorsement” of the state's November initiate to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. Such legalization also could make way for the legal sale and germination of cannabis seeds in the state, a change in law that seed banks around the world support. Seed banks allow those who use marijuana to grow their own plants, whether for recreational or medicinal purposes. Legal sales and germination of weed seeds would lead to a safer atmosphere for all involved, no matter the race.

NAACP leader Alice Huffman spoke at a press conference Tuesday, stating that marijuana laws are a means to criminalize young black men.

“It is time for them to stop using my community to fill the prisons,” said Huffman, who was joined at the press conference by supporters Aubry Stone, president of the California Black Chamber of Commerce, and Neil Franklin, with the group Law Enforcement Against Prohibition.

The legalization of recreational marijuana use – and by association, legalizing the sale and germination of weed seeds – would help an already challenged community, according to the Drug Policy Alliance report.

“For young, low-income African Americans and Latinos – who use marijuana less than young whites, and who already face numerous barriers and hurdles – a criminal record for the 'drug crime' of marijuana possession can seriously harm their life chances.”

The initiative to legalize the recreational use of marijuana – Proposition 19 – is sponsored by Richard Lee, founder of Oaksterdam University. The Oakland school instructs those wanting to get into the medical marijuana business how to do so. Schools such as Oaksterdam are kindred spirits to the world's seed banks, whose owners believe that legalizing the sale of cannabis seeds would have only a positive effect on the marijuana community, made up of those who use marijuana recreationally and/or medicinally and/or those who practice the germination of cannabis seeds. Seed banks support Proposition 19 fully and look forward to a time when using marijuana – and/or germinating weed seeds – will not lead to arrest, no matter what color skin the user has.
